Introductory Bible Course

Lesson 1 - Overview

Why are we here, the wonders of the universe around us, problems in society, what happens after we die, ...

Questions over which man has pondered for millenia.

Some believe we can find the answers within ourselves. Whilst others say there is something bigger than us that we need to seek.

And there are many, many books ... on many, many subjects! Some are life-coaching or self-help books, promising to lead us into success in business, health or relationships. Others explore philosophy and the meaning of life. Many books have been written by people claiming to be experts in their field - not all of them are reliable.

And then some claim to be written by greater than human beings. Some books claim to come from none other than the Creator of the universe! But again, any book can claim that, but it doesn't necessarily make it true.

Just imagine though, for a minute, that there was a Human ‘Manual’ for our maintenance, written by our ‘Manufacturer’!

We know that there are a number of books which make this high claim. Which, if any, are really so?

We'll now take a look at one such book ...

The Bible

“Thus says the LORD ...”
“God said ...”

- Such phrases occur over 3000 times in the Bible.

- Consider also the following:

For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe.
(1 Thessalonians 2:13)

If the Bible really comes from God - then we would do well to take it seriously. But if not, then we ought to call it out as a fraud!

But is it possible to know for sure if this book really is from God?

Well, the Bible puts up this claim:

You may say in your heart, “How shall we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?”  When a prophet speaks in the LORD’s name, if the thing does not follow, nor happen, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You shall not be afraid of him.
(Deuteronomy 18:21-22)

Let's do a little investigating! - Which we do in the next lesson.
